Granny Mouse Country House & Spa in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands has launched an additional 12 suites, to better cater for its customers, who include corporate, conference, leisure, holidaymakers and honeymoon travellers.
The new owners of this long-standing property, Gill Bowmaker and Mark Wood, drew inspiration from the countryside when making their mark on the hotel. Bowmaker says her intention was to create a soothing retreat where guests can enjoy the peace for which the Midlands is renowned. The giant day beds in each new suite are a key feature in this regard, allowing guests to relax in the comfort of their corner lounge areas while taking in the views of the Lion’s River.
Guests can choose between upstairs or downstairs suites, with each suite featuring different decor and ambience. Granny Mouse’s new extension is privately walled, making it a discreet option for high profile guests who value their privacy or those looking for seclusion.
The overall result, which has been designed by architect Paul van der Merwe from Pretoria, promises to help guests make the most of the Midlands’ singular atmosphere. Stack doors leading onto private decks allow guests to spend time in the fresh air. Fireplaces and under-floor heating keep the suites warm during chilly Midlands evenings. And air-conditioning ensures guests remain comfortable when temperatures rise.
The suites are fitted with king-size beds, with certain suites featuring specially made beds measuring 2.3m. Large bathrooms have sliding windows to take in the view, as well as separate showers and double basins. A range of biodegradable cosmetics made from pure essential oils add to the luxury.
The new area has been planted as an indigenous garden and the old gardens are slowly being transformed.
A complimentary golf shuttle between the new wing and Granny Mouse’s main buildings help guests take advantage of its range of facilities, including the spa, two restaurants (Eaves fine-dining and the family-friendly Bistro), a single malt and whiskey bar, a wedding venue and chapel, conference rooms, wine cellar and two swimming pools. The property also offers river walks and easy access to the multitude of activities that make the Midlands a favourite with holidaymakers.
