Maldives: Surf’s up for competitors in Indian Ocean contest

Catch a pricey wave this summer at one of the world’s most exclusive surfing events in the Maldives, an island nation in the Indian Ocean.

Four Seasons Maldives Surf Champions Trophy contest, scheduled Aug. 26-Sept. 2, will pit six internationally known surfers against one another in a $25,000 showdown. Travelers who can afford the tariff can hop on a wave and rub shoulders with the greats – in the water or on the beach in the evening drinking rum.

Called the world’s most luxurious surf contest, the event takes place near Four Seasons Maldives Resort at Kuda Huraa. The resort, on a private coral island, is one of three area Four Seasons facilities; the others include Landaa Giraavaru, another resort, and the Explorer, a surf vessel that takes passengers to the spots where the break is best.

“We are gearing up for the best competition yet,” said Mark Winson, the contest’s coordinator. “This is an event like no other in the world.”

Australian surfer Damien ‘Dooma’ Hardman, 46, narrowly defeated U.S. surfer Tom Curren for the title last year and will be back to compete again in August.

Besides the international contest, a domestic championship also takes place, featuring Maldives surfers. Both events are hosted aboard the Explorer. All competitors, judges and spectators stay at the 96-bungalow Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa.

Groups of surfers can book an all-inclusive five-night Surf and Stay package that includes competition day passes aboard the Four Seasons Explorer, and local guided surfing. The package starts at $6,590, double occupancy, for five nights.

Individual bungalows start at $1,000 a night, double occupancy, including breakfast.
